At which level of spatial detail can a process-based model capture forest variables? The ecosystem model LPJ-GUESS was applied with the module for forest management in a Swedish context to evaluate model performance in simulating forest standing volume and carbon fluxes. In order to evaluate the model at the landscape scale, results were compared to NFI data. Carbon fluxes of net ecosystem exchange, gross primary production and ecosystem respiration were evaluated against ICOS data for two local sites in the boreonemoral and nemoral biomes. The results suggest an adequate representation of Norway spruce and Scots pine at the landscape scale, but the model produced results for carbon fluxes of varying accuracy at the local scale.
