Geographical databases

Please note that this is an internet based course that can only be taken as part of the GIS master program .

Course contents

This course allows you to explore theoretical and practical concepts of geographical databases. That includes design, implementation and usage of geographical databases. The course starts with general database terminologies such as DBMS, SQL, ACID, etc. Then it concentrates on steps for design and implementation of a database. This includes:

  • requirement analysis
  • conceptual modelling
  • internal modelling and physical implementation

You will learn about database modelling using UML, how to create tables from UML, how to normalize tables, how to create tables in a DBMS, as well as indexing techniques. In addition, you learn Structured Query Language (SQL) for creating and managing databases, as well as retrieving data from databases. Finally the course focuses on geographical databases including techniques for managing spatial data in a database, Spatial SQL and indexing techniques in geographical databases.

Teaching methods

Teaching consists of lectures and practical exercises that you submit to your teachers. The course ends with a written exam.

This is and internet based course. You do not need to visit Lund physically in order to attend.
