Master’s programme in Geographical Information Systems

Full distance learning programme

The Master´s programme in Geographical Information Science is a distance learning master´s programme that you may study at half time or full time pace, 120 ECTS. If you want to learn how to analyse, simulate and present spatial phenomena with use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), then this is the master's programme for you.

Programme overview

As a student on this programme you will obtain the basic practical training of how to use the latest GIS software together with the needed theoretical background. You have the opportunity to learn database methods, cartography and extend your knowledge in GIS methods within different fields of application. The aim of the programme is to offer the student a flexible and complete master´s education in GIS. All the courses offered in this Master´s programme are internet based. The course material is presented as text, sound- and video presentations and students and teachers have contact through the internetforum, email or Skype. As a student you have the possibility to choose your own study-pace (100% or 50%).

Hardware requirements and operating systems

Since this is a distance programme, you need your own computer upon which to install the GIS software you will need.  This computer must run a modern version of the Windows operating system, as is required for ArcGIS Pro.  The specific technical requirements to run ArcGIS Pro can be found at the ESRI website:

Using a Mac

Note:  While it is possible to install Windows on an Apple computer (using Boot Camp on older machines with Intel processors or some virtualization approach on Apple silicon) we can provide NO support for this approach.  That means that if you have technical issues we cannot help you, and you must provide your own licensed copy of an appropriate Windows OS as well as any other software needed to make this work.

Content

The programme starts with one semester (30 ects) of compulsory courses. The programme then offers great opportunities to tailor your education as there are many elective courses to choose from. In this programme 52.5 ECTS can be chosen from 90 ECTS of currently available courses. The programme ends with a 7.5 ects course i Research Methodology, and a 30 ects Master´s degree project thesis work.

  • natural sciences
  • social sciences and civil engineering
  • within hydrology
  • agriculture
  • forestry
  • environmental issues, and
  • within geographical planning on local, regional and national level
