Remote Sensing for Landscape Studies


Course contents

This will teach you remote sensing, that is, the use of aerial photographs to collect information about landscapes and environment.

We will focus on how to analyze aerial photographs. By doing so, we can detect a wide range of features depending on the film emulsion used, e.g. black and white, normal colour and infra-red. The course covers the theoretical aspects of aerial photography. You will also have several opportunities to interpret and handle different types of non-digital image information from landscapes and environments in different parts of the world.

Real-world case scenarios

During the course, you will work with applied interpretation. You will be simulating a real working situation, which implies:

  • planning and research
  • mapping of different landscape elements & changes in vegetation cover over time
  • field data collection
  • accuracy determination of interpretation

You will also be trained in presenting your results in writing and verbally.

Apart from this, you will also study vegetation, climate, and remote sensing data for analysing the relationship between different landscape elements of a larger area by modelling. Results will be compared with different type of images. In the end of the course, digital image classification and handling is also introduced in the course.


The theoretical material is presented in traditional lectures, but also during course elements where you have to collect, evaluate and present information by your self. You will be taught to critically review a number of publications based on relevant methods. Teaching consists of lectures, practical and field exercises, seminars and project work.

Prerequisites: General admission requirements and 60 ECTS in science studies, including NGEA01 or equivalent or alternatively BIO571 or equivalent. Students with 60 ECTS in Geography, Archaeology, Urban planning or Landscape planning may also be admitted.
