GIS in Tourism and Recreational Planning


In this course the student will explore theoretical and practical concepts of sustainable tourism planning in natural areas and how GIS may facilitate the planning and management of tourism. Theories, concepts and conflicts regarding sustainable tourism are taught in in relation to natural area ecology.

A simplified Tourism Decision Support System (TDSS) is explored and how such a system can be linked to a GIS. Spatial sensitivity analysis based on a natural area’s physical and biological properties with respect to ecological sensitivity. Visualization and analysis of tourism impact. This course contains practical exercises using GIS as well as theoretical exercises and based on course literature and/or scientific articles.

NOTE: This is an internet based course. You are not supposed to travel to Lund to attend. The course can only be taken as part of the iGEON master program.
