Analysis of geographical accessibility

Geographic accessibility analysis is used to calculate the accessibility of such social services for the population. For example be the travel time to schools, hospitals and shops. These types of calculations are often over large geographic areas, such as throughout Sweden, and therefore require the handling of large amounts of data and efficient computational methods.

A project conducted within the geographical accessibility analysis was funded by the Swedish Rescue Services Agency. The purpose of this project was to create a program to evaluate the allocation of rescue resources. Within a few years, such a tool could be used by municipalities to optimize resources.

To use this the developed tool the user must define a scenario. The two main components of the scenario are:

  • What rescue resources available (resource type and geographic location specified either as a point or surface).
  • What are the risk items (e.g. fire in the building, traffic accident and drowning).

When the user defined a scenario, the calculations and the following results will be presented

  • Coverage: A chart showing the percentage of risk objects that are reached by rescue units as a function of time.
  • The average insert time: An average value for the time it takes for the scenario units to reach a critical object.
  • Power Structure: A graph showing the number of units at a given location as a function of time.
