Changing Extremes

  1. Introduction before excursion in:
    Historical aspects of climate change and research at Svalbard,
    Practical evaluation of climate change at landscape level, incl. an exercise in generating orthophotos and digital elevation models using drones and threats to the arctic
    Ecosystems: Tourism before, now and tomorrow; arctic soil processes, vegetation,  biotic-abiotic interactions
    Developing of relevant projects to course aim which will carried out on Svalbard
  2. Teaching infield of effects of global change in a high Artic permafrost environment:
    Glacial retreat -- at Trygghamna arctic primary succession since the local glacial retreat starting at 1936,
    Atmospheric carbon exchange – in Adventdalen, visit of measurement stations
    Vulnerability of the landscape: impact of climate change and tourism on ecosystem processes build on long  term research of Jonas Åkerman: weathering, permafrost processes, species distribution, hydrological changes  around Cap Linnë
  3.  Performance of developed small scale project: group work of participants, relevant to the aim of the course
  4. Analysing, evaluating and presentation of project work back

Conditions

Limited to 16 students, priority to CLIMBECCO and Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science PhD students (8) as well as to WSL PhD students (8).

Costs: free of charge except for Flight and accommodation (ca. 25000 SEK or 2500 CHF).
