Master’s Programme in Geomatics
Please note that the Master´s programme in Geomatics will develop into Master´s programme in GIS and Remote sensing, starting in 2022. Last intake to the Geomatics is autumn 2021.
The Master´s programme in Geomatics prepares you for work in governmental and private organisations as well as for research. The courses cover a wide range of areas in the field of geomatics including geographic information systems (GIS), geodesy, remote sensing and computer science.
Bachelor´s degree representing 180 ECTS in scientific or technical subjects. You must be able to demonstrate proficiency in English by means of an internationally recognised test, e.g. TOEFL, IELTS or the equivalent.
There may be some other country specific requirements.
When you are accepted as a student to the programme, you are guaranteed a place on all courses on condition that you fulfil the particular entry requirements for each course.
The programme consists of three parts. The first part provides theoretical courses in e.g. computer science and statistics. The second part contains a number of courses in geographic information technology, for example remote sensing, geodesy, spatial database technology and cartographic rules for screen display. The third and last part treats applications mainly focusing on environmental, physical and urban planning.
One opportunity for you admitted to the geomatics program is to read part of the program abroad. There are many partner universities at Lund University to choose from, and also specific agreements between our department and departments at other universities abroad.

Job market after education
The master's program in geomatics aims to provide an attractive education that is sought after in state and municipal administration, private business and provides a basis for research in the field. The use of GIS in particular is extremely expansive in a number of industries. To meet the growing need for people with competence in geomatics, the need for education is considered to be very great. It is mainly municipalities, administrations and consulting companies that currently employ geomaticians.
Overview of courses in the programme
Starting with the autumn semester:
GIS is very useful and in demand by many employers who work with the environment and community planning. Here you will learn to understand, analyze and cartographically and graphically present digital map material.
In-depth study of GIS and spatial analysis. Here you work with advanced use of existing programs for database construction, analysis and presentation of geographical information.
In the course Spatial Analysis, you will learn how information about processes in the spatial environment can be analyzed, such as urban distribution, agricultural land, the presence of natural resources or water flows. Geographic databases are about designing, building and using geographic databases.
The course gives you theory and technology regarding the use of digital satellite-based remote analysis in important application areas, such as climate, environment, agriculture, forestry, urban applications and water management and how to use satellite data in different time and space resolution.
You will learn to use Matlab and and Python especially with a focus on natural geographical applications. No previous programming knowledge required.
Web GIS teaches you to publish, visualize and the architecture of web GIS, with different programming languages, cartography, geoportals and more. Algorithms in GIS give you deeper theoretical knowledge in GIS to be able to do more analyzes in advanced GIS tools.
The degree project is your independent work, where you immerse yourself in a topic that interests you. You have a supervisor and can, for example, do your degree project in one of the research projects that our talented researchers at the department work with. You can also choose to do your degree project in collaboration with companies, other universities or organizations. You make the layout and subject delimitation in consultation with your supervisor.
