Ecosystems Analysis


Course contents

This course will give you a basic understanding of how different ecosystems affect and are affected by the atmosphere and geology. You will also gain an understanding of the fundamental scientific background to various environmental problems, such as the greenhouse effect and ozone depletion.

To give you a solid theoretical background for the practical work on issues related to global environmental problems, the course includes lectures in the subject areas:

  • biogeography
  • biogeochemistry
  • hydrology, and
  • practical ecosystem analysis

Practical skill training

You will also obtain practical knowledge of the subject. From the start of the course, we will focus on field work as the course proceeds and culminates with a week-long intensive fields trip with subsequent project work. During this fieldwork, you will learn different measurement methodologies, such as:

  • basic repeated vegetation inventory
  • chemical soil and vegetation analysis, and
  • measurements of gas exchange between soil, vegetation and atmosphere.


The course consists of lectures, practicals, field exercises, seminars, group work and project work.
