Dan Metcalfe

I am a Senior Lecturer who started at Lund University in 2015. My research is very diverse but the unifying theme is my underlying interest in the interactions between climate, biogeochemical cycles and plant and animal communities. Key strands of previous and ongoing research are:

  1. Global Patterns of Tropical Forest Carbon Cycling.
  2. Herbivore Impacts on Ecosystem Biogeochemistry.
  3. Role of Fire in Boreal Forest Processes.
  4. Carbon-Nitrogen Interactions in Boreal Forest.
  5. Climate change impacts on tropical montane cloud forests (see the cloud curtain project webpage)

My publication outputs are summarized below, for more detail see my Google Scholar profile. If you want to contact me use my email or office phone (+46 46 222 86 97).

research summary

Group

Upcoming: Two phd/postdoc positions will be advertised shortly, one in modelling of forest disturbance and the other in ecology of tropical montane rainforest (as part of the cloud curtain project)

Current

Henni Ylänne: Henni is a postdoctoral research fellow working on a two year project (2018-2019) funded by BECC looking at the links between herbivory, plant traits and ecosystem biogeochemistry in the Arctic. Henni has just received a major grant to independantly expand and enhance this work over the next three years.

Bernice Hwang: Bernice is a PhD student working on my ERC Consolidator project (2016-2021) examining the impact of insect herbivores on biogeochemical cycling across pristine forests worldwide.

Aradhana Roberts: Aradhana is a PhD student working on my ERC Consolidator project (2016-2021) assessing the role of major disturbance factors like CO2, fire, drought and logging in mediating herbivore impacts on forest biogeochemistry.

Johan Eckdahl: Johan is a PhD student working on a BECC funded project (2019-2022) to assess the impacts of the 2018 forest fires across Sweden on forest diversity and function.

Antje Gärtner: Antje is a PhD student i am co-supervising with Anders Ahlström who is using modelling and field data to assess carbon cycling in primary forest systems.

Ainara Leizeaga: Aimara is a PhD student i am co-supervising with Johannes Rousk who is testing how shifts in water availability modify soil microbial communities.

Alumni

Jeppe Ågard Kristensen: Jeppe was a PhD student working on a VR project (2015-2018) studying the impacts of insect herbivores on Arctic Birch forest biogeochemistry in a changing climate. Jeppe successfully defended his thesis in September 2019.
