Peatland forestry is rocket science
Prof. Annamari Laurén, from the University of Eastern Finland, will give a seminar at INES.
Annamari Laurén is Professor of process-based forest ecosystem modelling, expert on hydrological modelling in forest catchment.
Abstract: Responsible forestry aims at management that is socially and environmentally bearable; socially and economically equitable; and environmentally and economically viable. In peatlands this means that the production has to be profitable whilst keeping the adverse environmental effects, such nutrient leaching to water courses and greenhouse gas emissions at bearable level. Because all these ecosystem services are produced in the same biogechemical processes, they have to be solved at the same time. This calls for application of new generation ecosystem models and deeper systemic understanding among scientists and stakeholders.
