From Spring 2013 this course will no longer be given. Students active on the course will be able to finish it. The new course is GISA21: GIS an introduction, 15 ECTS
This is the first course in GIS. This Internet-based distance course is a balanced mix of theoretical foundation and practical applications. It contains nine course modules: introduction to GIS, cartography and map projections, vector structure, database and attributes, data capture, vector analysis, raster structure, raster analysis and visualization. By completing the course the student will:
- have a basic, theoretical and practical understanding of GIS, and
- be able to work independently with various types of geographical data in GIS.
Each course module includes theoretical lectures and theoretical and practical exercises. In order to give the students a solid base for working with GIS, the course focuses on computer skills, cartography and spatial thinking. The lectures and exercises cover classical cartographic concepts, as well as modern concepts of GIS. The student will learn about different spatial data structures, data capture, analysis and map making.
NOTE: This is an internet based course. You are not supposed to travel to Lund to attend. The course is part of LUMA-GIS, the master program in GIS, but it is also possible to study this course outside the program. You can read more about the master program, the admission requirements and other rules and regulations on the homepage of LUMA-GIS.
Teaching consists of lectures and practical exercises that you will submit to the teachers. The course ends with a written exam.
