This course finalizes the Master´s program in GIS (LUMA-GIS) and is compulsory for obtaining a MSc degree in Geographical Information Science, from Lund University. Here you will perform a research project using GIS techniques and writing a scientific thesis in English where you report the aim of your study, the used methodology, your results and discuss your results in a wider concept. The size of the thesis should be equal to 20 weeks of fulltime work, including data collection, analyses, literature review and writing. Your thesis can be applied or focusing on more technical issues.
The degree thesis is an independent performed project chosen together with or accepted by a supervisor at Lund University. As you may live far away from Lund University, we generally also recommend at least one, locally based, co-supervisor. This could be one of your superiors at work, teachers or other suitable contact. Her/his role will be to support you with guidance and knowledge that cannot be obtained at Lund University.
Your thesis should be defended before an examination board, in an open seminar.
To be registered for the thesis course, you must be admitted to LUMA-GIS and should have passed the four compulsory courses: GIS, an introduction; GIS, advanced course; Applied geographical data structuring; and Research methodology, as well as seven optional GIS courses at advanced level (GISNxx), together equaling 90 ECTS of GIS courses.
Course responsible is Harry Lankreijer. You are welcome to contact him if you have any questions, but read the course compendium available from the course homepage first. It is recommended to start early with finding a suitable subject for your thesis project and collecting GIS data.
