The trees communicate and affect the climate

Ylva Persson

Ylva Persson, PhD student in Physical Geography and Ecosystem Sciences at Lund University, is conducting research on cloned trees. Her aim is to understand how the substances secreted by trees affects, and is affected, by climate.

Ylva Persson studies the trees' volatile organic compounds (BVOCs).  It does not only give the plants their characteristic smell, but it also have other effects, such as decreasing the leaf temperature, attract predators to insect herbivores and is even used as a way of communication from tree to tree. The research is done on clones of trees in different parts of Europe. The exciting research of Ylva has recently been featured in Sydsvenska Dagbladet (Google translated).
